The MMO I'm most anticipating is Star Wars: the Old Republic. It sounds like it will be the first MMO in a while to bring a lot of new elements to the genre.
If I remember right, they were talking about a microtransaction model on this? Is that still the news? I haven't really been following it that closely.
I don't play MMOs but this one actually interests me a bit. They are still trying to work a few things out if the folks at IGN are to be believed, but I generally think it could be cool, and I don't even care about Star Wars, I'm jsut basing this on what I've heard/seen on the gameplay.
@ChangeAgent I Bing'd it, and it doesn't look like Bioware has announced the business model. I think EA as a company, though, is open to the micro transaction model. It wouldn't surprise me entirely if they went that route.
I'm very excited about this game as well. Also interested in seeing what Star Trek Online looks like, along with the MMO being made by Carbine/NCSoft.
WoW isn't really dominating as much as people think. The f2p markets holds a large percent of mmo subscribers and some of the f2p mmos like "Perfect World International" claim to have about 4million+ players. It would be nice for someone to hit 10 million+ and officially dethrone it.
@Bonemane The Guild Wars creators claim that 10 million+ people play GW as well. I'm starting to just not listen to the statistics and judge by experience. In my experience, everyone I know plays World of Warcrack. It's sad, but true.
God, that game is more addicting than Heroin Hero.
Also, obligatory "HOLY CRAP OLD REPUBLIC I WANT!!"
No matter how many people play (or don't play), I'll still be on there. Unless it sucks, that is.
hmm... definitely checking this out if I can. Not sure what I'd play as though.. as I really don't know where I'd fit in the Star Wars Old Republic world.
I mean in Star Trek Online, I'll prolly doing my best to represent Admiral Katherine Janeway. That is doing what I need to, but only when I need to. Trying to resolve conflict in various manners. I mean if Star Trek Online allowed for Time Paradoxes, I'd be making so many myself that people in the 29th Century are out to kill me, and some of Q want to bed me (really... looking at it, I can very honestly see why Q looked at Janeway and was like: I want to tap that hot piece of temporal anomaly action (I mean, I am not sure there is an episode that Janeway did not some how break the Temporal Prime Directive at least _three_ times that day... if only because she'd time travel back to that day later in the series)).
I mean, I am much too Chaotic to fit in the common idea of Jedi--but I know enough that Jedi/Sith does not mean Good/Evil or Chaos/Order. I mean Yoda even suggested, somewhere, that the Sith are not so much and evil counter force to the Jedi. They are just a form of Cancer in the galaxy.
So I prolly will grab this game... however I have no idea if I'd be able to play a character I could enjoy. I dunno, maybe if I could figure out what type of character I could role play is this and have fun maybe.
It should be noted that of the four main arch types in RPGs, I prolly fit best as a mix of role player, and lunatic. I am just not sure a lunatic would have much role in this game. Of course, I tend to put Yoda more into the Munchkin of these arch types anyways >.>
here is a tip, try out Knights of the Old Republic first that should guide you a bit down which road you decide to take whether its lightside or darkside and well if that doesnt work you can still kick Borg ass an take names as Janeway :-D
@SouZou The thing with the "we have X million users" numbers is they are not apples-to-apples. When WoW quotes the 11M+ plus, that's current active/paying subscribers... When the F2P games quote the numbers, they are talking about all the people who have ever signed up, even if they didn't pay anything. I like the F2P market, but I think their numbers are over-inflated (including GW).
@Tarinth Honestly, that doesn't surprise me. With something that's F2P, people don't get booted off the long list of users when they stop paying their bill, as they don't have one.
That, and on GW, it's so easy to take a 2 year break and just hop back on. Which I've done :D
Eagerly anticipating GW2. The trailer had me drooling.

1) I HOPE they don't FLOX it up like Sony did with their "improvements" to their Star Wars: Galaxies MMO jobs list and
2) I wonder if/hope this takes a bite out of the WoW domination of the MMO market.

Sony failed with Galaxies
Bioware would never EVER follow their path now way in HELL!!
Keeping my fingers crossed for micro-transactions.
I mean, the two are not synonymous. Not all bounty hunters wear beskar'gam, and not all Mandalorians are bounty hunters.
But that's me and my nerdery talking. I'm sure I'll be pleased with it when it comes out, anyway.
